Around a hundred people have given me stats and figures and reasons which seek to explain why M'hijo hasn't yet found much to say. Maybe I would have believed the 101st person. Instead, this week he learned two new words, doubling his vocabulary. He has been saying "mama" and "dada" for many months and last week he pointed to Tobias when he came home from work and said "dada", marking the first time that he had used a word without my encouragement.
But this week it got even better when we put They Might Be Giants first children's album No! in the CD player. After a few listens to the song Violin Violin he started singing along, clearly* pronouncing the words "dust" and "mop" and trying hard to enunciate "speck" and "of" and "hippo" as well.
So his first words (aside from animal sounds, which he is pretty good at) are mama, dada, mop, and dust. Sahsez is still "rawa" to him, a sound that resembles her real name not a bit, and Abu (my mom) is still just "bu". He can't manage the first syllable yet.
*Okay, so "clearly" may be a bit of a stretch. My mother's ear knows exactly what he is saying, but I guess strangers might only hear "du" and "mo". They just don't listen carefully enough!
